A group who had an otherwise disappointing day's safari in South Africa's Kruger National Park on 2 December 2020 rounded a corner to find a group of white rhinos!

There was one large female and four sub-adults, most likely her offspring. But the peaceful moment was suddenly interrupted when a huge rhino bull barged into the scene, giving the rhino family and those watching from the vehicle a huge fright.

The rhino family scattered for a moment before gathering together again and returning to calm, before slowly disappearing into the thickets again.

With the threat of poaching, the rhino has become one of the world's most endangered wildlife species.

It was during a later afternoon safari in the Kruger National Park when we had the rare opportunity to experience a close encounter with six white rhinos in total. We did not see much on the safari initially but our luck turned for the better when we came a round a corner and unexpectedly came across five rhinos. The rhino family scattered all over for a moment before gathering together again. They stood there looking very confused by what just happened while my heart was still racing at the same time. The atmosphere turned peaceful again. The big rhino bull kept to himself in the near distance, while the family of five rhinos remained near the safari vehicle for a few minutes longer before slowly disappearing into the thickets again. With the ongoing threat of poaching, the rhino has become one of the most endangered wildlife species on this planet. It was such a magical moment to see six together in the wild.
