Police in southern India's Karwar were called to a school after residents heard a loud banging from inside on December 1.

When the residents called there was no response and when they peeped through the window, there was no sight of anyone.

As the noise continued, the spooked residents thought there was a ghost at play and called local police, which sent a team to the spot.

Police and locals followed the noise inside Shivaji High School and located the locked door that was making the noise.

The police then called the school administrator who handed over the key to the room.

Upon opening the door a stray dog appeared, causing the police and locals to burst into laughter.

The dog had managed to get itself locked inside the room and was desperately banging the door to get out. It went on its way peacefully unaware of the commotion it had caused.
