It was during lunch time one afternoon when I walked home and heard a strange and continuous buzzing noise coming from underneath a leaf of a cycad plant in my garden. I decided to investigate the source of the buzzing noise and to my surprise discovered a medium sized green praying mantis holding onto a huge cicada. The mantis had the cicada tightly gripped in its raptorial front legs. The cicada, that almost seemed double in size, put up a huge fight, buzzing its wings in an attempt to escape. The praying mantis did not look like he was going to let this one go and suddenly started feeding on the head of the cicada while it was still alive. The cicada kept fighting for its life and the mantis kept chewing away at its head. After about fifteen minutes I had to go home and decided to return after another fifteen minutes. On my return there were no more buzzing sounds and I was shocked to see that the mantis already devoured the whole head and was already into the abdomen of the cicada. I found it hard to believe that the mantis with its slim body would be able to put away all of that meat but this mantis had a voracious appetite. I left the scene for another twenty minutes. On my return I was totally amazed again by the eating capabilities of this praying mantis with only the cicada’s wings and empty body shell remaining. I zoomed in on the stomach of the mantis and it was bulging, its whole abdomen swollen, covered by a striking silvery colour that became more prominent. I was amazed to realize that this praying mantis was able to devour all that meat in under an hour. Nature never stops to amuse me.
