Customs officials in Chennai, Tamil Nadu seized almost £15,000 worth of gold being concealed underneath bandages and in the bottom of jeans.

A 27-year-old man was stopped at an exit gate after disembarking a flight from Dubai on December 6 after an officer noticed an abnormal bulge on his upper back.

Upon a personal search, it was revealed that there was a packet containing 147 grams of gold underneath the bandage.

On December 5, two passengers also arriving from Dubai were caught attempting to smuggle 289 grams of gold that was stitched into their jeans.

The total value of the gold was £14,971.29.

On Sunday (6th December) a man named Ahamed Anas ( Age 27) who arrived from Dubai by Air India Express was intercepted at exit gate by customs officer who noticed an abnormal bulge on his upper back. On personal search it was noticed that a big size medical bandage was stuck on his upper back. On pulling the bandage two gold paste packets weighing 168 grams were recovered which were found to be stuck to the inside portion. On extraction 147 grams of gold 24K purity gold valued at ₹ 7.5 lakhs was recovered and seized under Customs Act.
In another case on 5th December evening two passengers Jumma Khan and Mohamed Rafi who arrived from Dubai were intercepted at exit. On their personal search four packets of gold paste in plastic pouches weighing 176 grams , were found to be ingeniously stitched to the bottom portion of their jeans. On extraction 142 grams of gold of 24K purity valued at Rs. 7.23 lakhs was recovered and seized under Customs Act.
289 grams of 24K purity gold valued at Rs. 14.73 lakhs concealed under medical bandage and in bottom of jeans was recovered and seized by Chennai Air Customs under Customs Act.
