Twenty-storey Thai bank building is designed like a giant toy robot
This 20-storey building in Thailand that houses a banking firm looks like a giant toy robot.
The building was built in 1985 to become Bank of Asia's headquarters in Bangkok.
It has become one of the most iconic landmarks in the country's capital along with the Elephant building.
The building has two large eyes at the top in front of the executive room which is being lit at night as if the robot is standing there looking across the city.
Architect Sumet Chumsai Na Ayutthaya, 81, designed it after the firm's request to build a structure that will reflect the computerization of banking.
The national artist said he had the idea for the design after seeing his son's toy where the inspiration came from.
He said: "Back in 1975, I was in my tenth year of work, I remember how exhausted I was.
"I could not come up with any good idea until one morning my son came into my studio and played with his robot toy.
"Unconsciously, I sketched the building prototype which looks like that robot and sent it as a joke. The company then called me and informed me that they wanted my work.
"It made me realize that the older we get, the more we discard our colourful imagination."
Bank of Asia was bought by UOB bank in 2005 which has kept the unique building as their headquarters.
