Secret, rainbow-colored Utah hills offer mind-blowing, otherworldly landscapes

Buy video

This video shows a secret area of badlands located in Southern Utah, where the hills are composed of bentonite clay that is leftover from volcanic silt and ash dating back to the Jurassic period.

Bentonite naturally absorbs fine particles of surrounding mineral layers which results in the striped, rainbow colored patterns of these badlands. Although beautiful, this area becomes impossible to access after rain, which turns the ground into thick, sticky clay which renders cars useless until it dries out.

Footage filmed December 4.
