Indonesia's previously postponed regional elections are taking place across the country offering the vote to around 100 million people despite a recent surge in cases of COVID-19.

The election is fraught with controversy as Gibran Rakabuming Rak, President Joko Widodo's son, and son-in-law Bobby Afif Nasution bid for mayoral positions.

Footage filmed today (December 9) from Medan, the capital and largest city of the province of North Sumatra, shows an election official wearing a protective suit and taking people's temperatures with a thermometer before they enter the polling station.

Nasution and wife Kahiyang Ayu are also seen casting their votes.

Indonesia has recorded an increase to around 5,000 infections per day in recent weeks.

Indonesia pushed forward with holding regional elections on Wednesday, despite concerns about doing so amid the ongoing pandemic.

According to the Diplomat magazine, more than 105 million people will vote for the leaders of nine provinces, 224 regencies, and 37 cities, from Sumatra to the Banda Islands.
