The Dani tribe from Indonesia are one the world's most isolated peoples living in the mountainous regions of Western New Guinea.

Situated 1,600 metres above sea level in the Cyclops Mountains the 250,000-strong tribe are mostly farmers and hunters who work in the surrounding fields.

Footage filmed on December 9 shows members of the tribe surrounding a leseai, a square-shaped unit used for cooking, eating and family gatherings.

According to reports, the Dani were unknown to the outside world until the 1930s until explorers stumbled upon the people.

The Dani are animists believing that objects, places and creatures all possess a spiritual essence.

Some members of the tribe are attempting to break into local markets by growing and selling rice as well as posing for pictures with tourists.

The Dani tribe live a traditional existence in the Baliem Valley, situated 1600 metres above sea level in the heart of the Cyclops Mountains in Papua New Guinea, with an estimated population of 250,000 in that region. The valley has one of the highest densities of population in the Papua Province with only has one town, named Wamena. The Dani's settlements are usually located on the river banks and hill slopes of the Valley and are structures named Honai, Eweai and Leseai. Leseai is a square shaped unit used for family gatherings, cooking and eating. Honai and Eweai are round shaped sleeping quarters without ventilation to trap heat, as it gets very cold at night. The tribe are mostly farmers and hunters who often sing songs while hunting or working in the fields, usually accompanied by a musical instrument known as Pikon. The sound of Pikon also serves as an identification signal to a friend or an enemy.
