An armed thief broke into an ATM cabin owned by Karur Vysya Bank in Ramanathapuram, a town in southern India on December 4.

The man had covered his face with a helmet and was carrying an iron rod, but that failed to intimidate Rudrapathy, 50, who was working as the night security guard.

Rudrapathy grappled with the intruder and managed to remove his helmet. He even tried to lock up the thief inside the cabin, who seemed to put up a half-hearted fight with the middle-aged guard.

The thief quickly left after realising that the CCTV camera had captured his face without the helmet.

District officials congratulated Rudrapathy for his bravery and the Bank has given him a cash reward of Rs 5000 (68 USD) in appreciation.
