Gold worth $32041 seized by air customs officials in southern India
Gold worth Rs 23.6 lakhs ($32,041) was seized by the air customs department of southern India's Chennai International Airport on December 12. An aircraft was rummaged through following a tip. Another suspect was intercepted at the terminal of the airport.
A video featuring the smuggled items showcases two packets in which the gold was being smuggled in. Gold paste weighing 406 grams was found inside the packets on further investigation. Another visual features one packet of gold paste bundle weighing154 grams.
On extraction, the two gold packets yielded a total of 309 grams of gold valued at Rs 15.72 lakhs ($21,361) and the single bundle yielded 154 grams of gold valued at Rs 7.84 ($10,653) lakhs.
The customs department rummaged through Indigo airlines flight 6E 066 following a tip. The flight came in from Dubai. On inspection, two gold packets were found concealed ingeniously in the inner panel of the aircraft.
On the other hand, a suspect, identified as Kalil Rahman, arrived in the same flight. He was intercepted at the terminal and taken in for interrogation. On personal search, a bundle of gold past weighing 154 grams was extracted from him.
A total of 463 grams of gold valued at Rs 23.6 lakh ($32,041) was seized by the airport authorities under the Customs Act of 1962.
