A 9-year-old girl diagnosed with a tumour stayed awake for her brain surgery and played the synthesizer at a hospital in central India's Madhya Pradesh on December 8.

Soumya was brought to the hospital by her parents and the doctors had said that it would be a complicated surgery to perform as there was a chance of brain damage. In order to prevent that, the doctors decided to perform an awake craniotomy on her.

Senior Neurosurgeon Dr Abhishek Chauhan and Senior Anaesthesia Specialist Dr Vinod Sengar headed a team of medical specialists to perform the risky operation.

The 9-year-old is fond of the synthesizer and doctors asked her to play the instrument during the surgery.

Her surgery lasted two hours and the tumour was successfully removed.

Soumya was discharged from hospital on December 12.

Visuals of the girl being operated feature her effortlessly playing the synthesizer with both her hands while doctors extract the tumour detected in her brain. She is also handed over a mic to sing while doctors perform the critical surgery.

Awake craniotomy is a neurosurgical technique and a type of craniotomy that allows a surgeon to remove a brain tumour while the patient remains awake, to avoid brain damage.

Soumya is fond of playing the synthesizer and the doctors asked her to play the instrument during the surgery. She was given local anaesthesia only in the part of her head where the surgery was performed.

Her surgery lasted for about two hours and the tumour was successfully removed. She was kept under observation for some time and then discharged from the hospital on the evening of December 12.
