This 55-year-old elephant was rescued after performing for tourists on the Thai island of Koh Lanta for over 20 years.

According to World Animal Protection, she had been held at an elephant riding camp on the island, where she was chained to the side of the road and occasionally gave rides to tourists.

Footage from January 15 shows Sow the elephant in her new home, where she is looked after by keepers at the Following Giants rescue centre far away from the harm of tourism.

Once elderly, elephant’s last set of teeth are no longer sharp, they can’t eat the range and amount of food they need.

This puts them at risk of starvation and malnutrition and large pieces of food can become stuck in their digestion system.

Staff at Following Giants now provide her with a nutritious blend of pineapple leaves, sugar cane, salt and elephant pellet food.

Sow, is a 55 year old female elephant, that worked in the tourism industry for over 20 years. Sow had been at an elephant riding camp on Koh Lanta, chained at the side of the road, also occasionally giving rides to tourists. In 2019-2020 she was moved to Following Giants, a venue on the Thai island of Koh Lanta which through the work of World Animal Protection had transitioned to an observation-only, elephant-friendly venue.
