Trade unions and organisations joined a rally in Delhi, India on December 14 in solidarity for the farmers' protest against controversial farm bills.

Farmers are opposed to the new agricultural laws as they believe large corporations would be the only beneficiaries.

Up to 50 trade unions as well as organizations of women, students, and human rights activists held a meeting at Shaheed Park, Delhi Gate, on Monday to show solidarity with the protesting farmers. The meeting was held in response to the farmers’ call for nation-wide agitation against three controversial farm laws.

On Monday, they observed a day-long fast throughout the country and raised slogans outside the offices of district commissioners. While expressing support for the farmers’ movement, many Delhiites, including the representatives of Delhi’s citizens, professional associations, expressed their solidarity by issuing letters of support or through posts on social media.

Protesting farmers have expressed apprehension that the new agri laws would pave the way for the dismantling of the minimum support price system, leaving them at the "mercy" of big corporations. The government has maintained that the new laws will bring farmers better opportunities and usher in new technologies in agriculture.
