Rescue teams battled to save residents after heavy rain caused a river to overflow in the Philippines on Monday (December 13).

Footage shows the Malunog River in Apayao province swollen with fast-flowing muddy torrents. People living in villages downstream were ordered to evacuate.

A family of six including a person with disabilities were rescued in the village of Alem, while three individuals from the villages of Cabatacan and Imelda were rescued and taken to evacuation centres.

Evacuees returned to their respective homes late in the afternoon after the water gradually subsided.
