An elephant that was trapped in a 30-feet-deep well for 16 hours was rescued in a joint operation of Forest department and police officials in northeast India.

The elephant fell in the well on the night of December 15 near Jilingsereng village in Jharkhand. The following morning when villagers noticed the elephant in their well they informed the police and forest department.

The forest team used a JCB to try and dig the elephant a tunnel out, drawing crowds of onlookers to the beleaguered elephant, freeing it after five hours.

According to Tamad forest ranger Amarnath Bhagat, "There was a herd of elephants that came in the area two days back, and this elephant lost its way and came here and fell in the well."

The Forest official added that: "After its rescue the elephant went into the forest, we will later track the elephant and after tranquilizing will give him first aid treatment on his wounds."
