Tropical Depression Vicky causes landslide in Philippines
Residents were stranded after heavy rain from Tropical Depression Vicky caused a mountainside to collapse in the Philippines on Friday (December 18).
Resident John Mabaslay was called by relatives who told him that their house had been destroyed by the rock fall in the town of Monkayo, Davao De Oro provincial region, also known as the Compostela Valley.
He hurried home to see the condition of his family and see the damage caused by landslides in their area as well as the difficulty of drivers passing through mud and rocks scattered on the road.
He said: ''We are worried because the ground has softened here so much due to previous storms and now there is another one coming.''
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that Tropical Depression Vicky made landfall in the municipality of Baganga in the province of Davao Oriental. It brought maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 55 km/h.
