Thousands of motorists got stranded on Joshinetsu Expressway due to record snowfall in Japan.

A cold air mass brought record snow to the Japan seaside causing the northernmost island of Hokkaido, Tohoku and Chugoku regions to be buried in deep snow.

The footage filmed by @01a91bee28ce4a2 and @furin_nesso shows vehicles at a standstill on the snow-covered highway.

More than 1,000 people in Japan were forced to spend the night in their cars on Thursday (December 17) and members of the self-defence forces delivered food, blankets and fuel to the motorists.

A cold air mass brought record snow to the Japan seaside since Wednesday and stranded thousands of vehicles on roads and highways for close to a day in some cases.

From the northernmost island of Hokkaido to Tohoku and Chugoku regions, towns were buried in deep snow and paralyzed traffic on highways, stranding trucks and private vehicles. Although snowfall has weakened, heavy snow is still expected to relapse rom Thursday evening.
