This shocking footage shows the scale of plastic pollution in the Siak River in northern Indonesia's Pekanbaru.

Thousands of waste plastic can be seen floating on the surface of the river, completely obscuring the water in some parts, as a man rows his boat through the garbage.

The filmer said: "The accumulation of garbage occurs due to the lack of public awareness not to littering, especially in rivers."

A report by the World Bank claimed: "Every day, Indonesia generates 175,000 tons of waste and about 14% or 24,500 tons a day of plastics."

This footage taken in Pekanbaru, Riau Province on December 17 , 2020 shows floating plastic and styrofoam trash polluting a corner of Siak River and a man rows a boat on the Siak river which is covered by plastic waste.
