Saturn Jupiter 'Christmas star' formation seen ahead of conjunction in Kent, UK

Buy video

An ultra rare conjunction of the planets Saturn and Jupiter will occur on 21 December, when they appear to form one giant 'star', which many believe is what lead to the 'Christmas star' story.

The two gas giants were observed in the skies above Kent in this footage taken on 19 December (first 7 seconds) and 20 December above Leysdown. As is typical of the British weather, the forecast is predicted to be cloudy in South East England on the day of the big event!

'Three wise aviators' can just about be made out in the footage - they are statues of the Short Brothers (Eustace, Horace & Oswald) close to where they built the UK's first aircraft factory in Leysdown, with the crescent moon also making an appearance.
