Christmas star! UK weather watcher captures Jupiter and Saturn grand conjunction
Jupiter and Saturn could be seen from Dorset on England's south coast as the two planets are at their closest conjunction, from our viewpoint on Earth, for nearly 400 years.
Footage filmed by Jonathan Warner, who specialises in capturing breathtaking images from the air, shows the two planets in the sky with the rings of Saturn clearly visible and close up shots of the moon. The footage was captured on Sunday (December 20).
Warner captioned the video on social media: "Shot at Pilsdon Pen (Somerset/Dorset border) with our 20-year old telescope and a couple of cameras, to capture (in realtime video) the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, the closest they've appeared in the sky to each other since 1623 (technically they're slightly closer [on Monday], but it's raining [then]). Also shot a nice closeup of the moon. See if you can spot the moons of Jupiter too!"
On Monday, the planets are set to be 0.1 degrees apart, the closest since 1623.
