Sea Goose Berries | Comb Jellies Wash Up On Beach in Newport Beach, California | Beach Clean Up
ea Goose Berries | Comb Jellies Wash Up On Beach in Newport Beach, California | Beach Clean Up
On 12/21/2020, thousands of comb jellies, also called Sea Gooseberries, washed up on beaches all around Orange County. They are similar to jellyfish and they float and drift with the tide. These comb jellies are harmless to humans and do not contain stinging tentacles. There were thousands of them EVERYWHERE! Comb jellies have 8 rows of cilia that they rhythmically pulse to propel themselves and they use two long tentacles to hunt zooplankton, like tiny fish eggs and larvae. They have a primitive version of a stomach and you can see right through them. Comb jellies have been around for hundreds of million years and one reason for their success is because they are hermaphrodites so they can produce their own eggs and fertilize those of others! While at the beach we also came across some trash and microplastic so we made sure to dispose of it properly! Don’t forget to reduce, reuse, and recycle! After taking a peek at the comb jellies bioluminescence and admiring their beauty, we put them back in the ocean where they belong.
