Passengers from an Air India flight from London Heathrow to the Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport in Punjab were made to wait for 12 hours due to COVID-19 testing, according to one traveller.

Footage captured by Twitter user @amanbharaj3011 on December 22 shows crowds of people chanting as they wait to be tested for coronavirus.

The filmer said: "It was around 7am when the passengers started to feel agitated after many hours of waiting."

Passengers were only allowed to enter India if they tested negative for COVID-19, prompting a large backlog of people.

Over 40 countries banned travel from the UK after a new, virulent strain of COVID-19 emerged across parts of England.

Passengers from an Air India flight from Heathrow Airport in London endured over 12 hours of waiting due to COVID-19 testing in Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport in Amritsar, Punjab.

The long wait agitated passengers and their relatives waiting outside the terminal. Passengers were allowed to exit only after testing negative.

The flight departed from Heathrow before India decided to suspend flights from the UK in response to news about a new strain of coronavirus sweeping across England.
