Customs officials on Friday (December 25) seized foreign currency worth more than 10,000 US dollars from a suspect at Chennai International Airport in India.

The suspect was intercepted at the Anna International Terminal during departure.

The notes were seized by customs officials under Indian laws restricting imports of foreign currency.

A search of two bags revealed 6,600 euros and 2,000 pounds sterling secreted in different pockets of the bags.

Foreign currency in Euros and Pound sterling worth Rs. 7.78 lakhs ($10,561) was seized by air customs officials in southern India's Chennai International Airport on December 25.

The suspect was intercepted at the Anna International Terminal during departure.

Visuals show an expert inspecting a black side bag. All the sections and pockets of the bag are checked and a yellow envelope carrying foreign currency bills is recovered from the back pocket, Furthermore, another set of currency bills are retrieved from another backpack.

A total of 6,600 Euros ($8,107) in denomination of 50 and 2,000 GBP ($2,676) in denomination of 20 equivalent to Rs 7.78 lakhs ($10,561) was retrieved from both the bags.

The suspect, identified as Mohammed Azarudeen, was leaving for Dubai by Emirates Flight EK-543 and was intercepted at the departure terminal on suspicion of carrying foreign currency. The bills were seized by the air customs officials under the Customs Act read with the Foreign Exchange Management ( Export and Import of currency) (Amendment) Regulations, 2015.
