Beachgoers at Muizenberg Beach in Cape Town, South Africa, defied on Tuesday (December 29) the new level 3 restrictions implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The new restrictions, announced in an address by President Cyril Ramaphosa, have closed all public beaches, pools, rivers, damns and lakes. All indoor and outdoor gatherings are also prohibited. The new regulations will be in effect until January 15, 2021.

According to the filmer, one beachgoer attacked a journalist while the media were filming on the beach. Media under the new regulations are regarded as essential workers and are not subject to the same rules as beachgoers. The lady is then seen approaching the police and asking them to tell the media to stop “harassing” her, as she did not want to be filmed.

Speaking on camera, beachgoer Carl Van Der Westhuizen claims the new level 3 restrictions are racist and an attack on South Africa’s white minority.

Further footage shows surfers arriving at the beach and police vehicles patrolling the area.
