High above Times Square on the Eve of New Year's Eve, members of the Times Square Alliance Countdown Entertainment, and workers from Landmark Signs tested the giant Waterford Crystal Ball on the top of One Times Square on Wednesday (December 30).

The ball, at 12-feet in diameter and weighing nearly six tons, glittered and dazzled members of the press who were invited atop of the landmark to witness the test. It also wowed crowds of onlookers down below in Times Square, many of whom were in New York City for the first time and amazed to see the ball going up and down the poll above the large 2021 numerals.

Counting down and then flipping a giant on and off switch, Tim Tompkins and Jeffrey Straus watched and smiled behind their masks, as the ball rose into the sky along its massive pole. After a short time, it demonstrated its 90-second drop all the way back to the bottom.
