City governments in Indonesia will close all tourist attractions from 31 December 2020 to 3 January 2021 to prevent crowds and transmission of Covid-19 on the New Year 2020-2021.

The closure of tourist destination locations is carried out based on regional regulations, a circular from the Governor and an announcement from the Chief of Police.

Footage filmed in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra province, (31/12) shows police and soldiers guarding the Jam Gadang park pedestrian area.

Bukittinggi mayor ordered officers to close the clock on the Jam Gadang tower.

"Every turn of the year, the Jam Gadang becomes the center of attention when the moment of the turn of the year is indicated by the clocks on the four sides of the tower. The Covid-19 pandemic forces the government to cover the tower and clock with a white cloth," said the mayor Ramlan Nurmatias.

Police closed road access to locations that could potentially become the center of the crowd, causing congestion due to diverted traffic flow.

Restrictions are also placed on restaurants and cafes with a prohibition on serving guests to eat on the spot.

All business places and tourist attractions are prohibited from facilitating activities that result in crowds, and must implement the Covid-19 health protocol.
