A Vietnamese doctor was surprised recently to discover dozens of small 'mushrooms' growing in a man's ears.

The patient came to Dr Cuong in Ha Noi in December complaining of painful and itchy ears.

On examination with an endoscope, Cuong found the 2 cm-long fungi growing just above the eardrums.

He quickly removed them and told the patient it would take a few days for his ears to recover.

The fungi were causing inflammation and his uncomfortable symptoms, Cuong said.

The patient had likely transferred the fungi into his ear after sharing ear hygiene equipment with others, according to Cuong

This video was captured with the patient's permission.

A fungal ear infection develops when fungi grow inside a person's ear canal.

The condition, technically known as otomycosis, can be caused by various species of fungus and is fairly common.
