A 36-year-old woman chanted Hindu scriptures as she underwent open brain surgery in the Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad.

Dayaben Budhelia was submitted to hospital with a brain strain and after further inspection a lump was found in the speech and motor section of the right brain.

The patient needed to remain awake during the procedure due to the severity of the surgery. Budhelia asked if she could chant scriptures to help her through the operation.

The 36-year-old chanted the scriptures throughout the almost two-hour-long surgery. She was discharged three days later.

Out of the 9,000 cases that Dr. Kalpesh has treated, this was the first time a patient kept humming the verses of the sacred Bhagavad Gita.

A 36-year-old woman, identified as Dayaben Budhelia, chanted verses of the Gita during her open-brain surgery in western India's Gujarat. The surgery took place on December 23 in the Zydus Hospital in Ahmedabad, following the success of which Dayaben was discharged from the hospital three days later.

Dayaben Budhelia, a resident of Surat, had a brain strain. A lump was diagnosed in her brain on further inspection. According to the experts, the patient had a high probability of being paralyzed since the lump was located in the speech and motor section of the right brain. Therefore, preparations for surgery were made and carried out by a team of doctors, headed by Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Kalpesh Shah and Dr. Meeta Agrawal.

Given the severeness of the surgery, the patient needed to remain conscious. On being informed, Dayaben asked the doctors if she could chant scriptures while the surgery was being conducted. Upon receiving the approval of the experts, the patient recited the verses for the entire duration of the procedure.

The patient was given awake anesthesia during the surgery and continued chanting the scriptures for one and a half hours, during which time the procedure was concluded. Dayaben was discharged from the hospital three days after.

Out of the 9,000 cases that Dr. Kalpesh has treated, this was the first case wherein the patient kept humming the verses of the sacred Bhagwat Gita.
