Fossil enthusiast uncovers glowing remnants of 12-million-year-old crab

Fossil enthusiast Mamlambo from New Zealand has captured the process where they reveal the glowing remnants of a crab that has been fossilised for over 12 million years.

Footage from January 4 shows the discovery of what appears to be any old rock from a beach.

Then, with the use of a specialised drill the outer layers are removed, revealing a 12-million-year-old fossilised crab.

Using ultraviolet light, the former crab can be seen glowing due to the calcite in the rock.

Mamlambo told Newsflare: "I found a crab fossil that had broken in half on the beach.

"This was a good opportunity to see what the inside of a crab fossil looks like.

"The crab fossil is around 12-million-years-old and is an extinct species, Tumidocarcinus Giganteus found in New Zealand.

"I used an air scribe (like a small jackhammer) to remove the rock from the fossil.

"I use consolidant (Paraloid B-72) to make sure the crab carapace doesn't start flaking which it can sometimes do.

"It takes 5 hours to remove the rock.

"At one point I switch to a more delicate air scribe to do some more delicate work.

"The air scribes move at around 10,000 beats per minute (bpm) and run off an air compressor.

"Between the rock and the fossil, there is a thin layer of calcite crystals which needs to be removed carefully.

"Calcite crystals sometimes form in marine fossils such as this.

"The gloves I wear are vibration-reducing gloves, really padded, to stop the vibrations from causing long-term nerve damage in my hand.

"Once I am done with removing the rock, I use a UV torch to shine on the crab and it glows a yellowish-green colour showing it is solid calcite (calcium carbonate) inside.

"On the outside, the small cracks in the crab also fluoresce as they are filled in with calcite crystals.

"At the end of the video, the crab joins the rest of my crab collection."
