Toad follows my vocal lead – calling back when I mimic him!
Flat-backed Toads (Sclerophrys pusilla) are a common large toad found in the lowveld savanna. These calling males were at a small ornamental pond in the Punda Maria Rest Camp in Kruger National Park, South Africa. They stopped calling at my approach but began again when I poorly mimicked their call. Whenever one male toad began calling others joined in the chorus – this is known as antiphonal calling. There were also Guttural Toads (Sclerophrys gutturalis) calling nearby – you can hear their deep, pulsed snoring calls.
