Large islands of litter amassing on the Lim, a river that flows through the Balkans, is posing a threat to nearby hydropower plants.

Footage filmed by @principijelista on January 4 shows a huge accumulation of waste floating on the river's surface.

The filmer told Newsflare: "Garbage that accumulates every year in the town of Priboj, on Lake Potpec, in Serbia.

"The Lim River springs in Montenegro and passes through several municipalities until it reaches Priboj. Then Lim goes to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"This is an international problem and no one is still finding a permanent solution. This happens every year."

Local reports have said that a barrier used to hold back litter has broken causing the waste to float down towards the plants.
