Stranded residents fled their homes as a low-pressure area of weather caused heavy rain and floods which submerged several towns in the Philippines.

Footage showed people gathering their belongings – including two farmyard pigs – as they waded through the muddy torrents of flood water to reach evacuation centres in Negros Occidental province this morning (Jan 9).

Several towns in the province have once again experienced extreme weather this week after first being battered by heavy rain severe floods on New Year’s Day.

The rain returned and caused more flooding. Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office head Dr Zeaphard Gerhart Caelian said there were an estimated 1,089 families rescued from the flood.

No one was reported injured, missing, or dead but properties were left damaged during the flooding.
