This is the heartwarming moment a healthy baby giraffe was born at a zoo on New Year’s Day in Thailand.

Delighted zoo visitors enjoyed watching the baby as the mother laboured and successfully gave birth in Chonburi province on January 1.

Footage shows the seven-year-old mother giraffe, named Bow, standing up while struggling to push out its offspring.

The baby’s feet were the first to stick out of the womb before it lightly fell to the ground two hours later.

The mother then licked the fur of its beloved baby to clean it up before cuddling with it.

It took the newborn giraffe around half an hour before it was able to sit up and walk around by itself.

Anupong Anon, assistant director of the zoo, said their staff worked during the holidays to make sure the baby will be delivered safely.

He said: ‘We have asked our staff keep surveillance of the baby throughout the day and night so it can grow healthy.’

The gender of the baby is still unknown as they will have to wait up to 15 days before they get close to the nursing giraffe, which is being protected by its mother.

The baby was the ninth giraffe born at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo that houses more than 8,000 animals from more than 300 species.
