Swedish tourist, 46, found dead after falling from eighth-floor balcony in Thailand
A Swedish man was found dead after falling from the eighth-floor room of a building in Thailand.
Stefan Belan Botund, 46, had been visiting a friend who lives in an apartment unit in Pattaya on Thursday (Jan 7).
But he was allegedly appeared to be emotionally unstable when rang the bell and his friend opened the door to him.
Stefan’s friend let him in but claimed he did not greet him and made a beeline straight to the balcony.
Shocked building staff heard the body crash to the ground. They rushed over and found Stefan beside the swimming pool of the apartment with several broken bones.
Bizarrely, the friend who had been visiting claimed he was sitting in the room and unaware that Stefan had plunged from the balcony.
The friend, who has not been named, said: ‘I only knew about it when the staff came to inform me, but I didn’t know he would do that.
‘I thought he just wanted to hang out for a while because he had been having problems returning to Sweden because of the pandemic.’
The tourist had reportedly been stuck in the country for almost a year due to complications with the Covid-19 travel bans.
His friend claimed that the extended-stay had almost bankrupted the man which could have triggered the suicide.
However, the police said they will still need more evidence to prove that the man jumped from the balcony.
Police Colonel Khemmarin Phitsamai from Pattaya Police said: ‘We will check CCTV recordings around the area and wait for the autopsy report.’
Stefan’s body was taken to the hospital for a post-mortem examination while authorities are trying to contact his family in Sweden.
