Indonesian navy say location of missing plane now known

Search and rescue teams make preparations on Saturday evening (January 9) at a north Jakarta port to search for a missing Indonesian passenger plane believed to have 62 people on board.

According to the Reuters news agency, the Indonesian Navy has determined the coordinates of a Sriwijaya Air plane that went missing after taking off from Jakarta, Navy official Abdul Rasyid said. “The coordinates have been found and have been given to all Navy vessels in the area,” he told reporters.

Footage showed teams from the Indonesian navy and the National Search and Rescue Agency aboard the KRI Teluk Gilimanuk ship making preparations at Tanjung Port port.

Four warships were among a dozen vessels deployed on a search-and-rescue mission, Indonesia's transport minister said according to reports.

The Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737 lost contact en route to Pontianak in West Kalimantan province, according to officials.

According to Flight tracking website Flightradar24.com, the aircraft had fell more than than 3,000m in altitude in less than one minute.
