Cold weather in Switzerland created a halo effect around the Sun on Saturday (January 9).

Footage filmed by an avid skywatcher in Ardon showed the unusual effect.

"There was an obvious 22° halo around the Sun," said filmer Olivier Staiger.

"Later a bright upper tangent arc appeared on top of it. On the left and right side of the Sun two sun dogs appeared," Staiger added.

Sun dogs are caused by the refraction and scattering of light from hexagonal ice crystals

There was an obvious 22° halo around the Sun. Later a bright upper tangent arc appeared on top of it. On the left and right side of the Sun two sundogs appeared. And a rare 46° halo was occasionnally seen in the wider view. And even a few bits of parhelic circle made faint appearance near the sundogs.
