Israel leads vaccine race with nearly one in five already given first jab

Israelis in Jerusalem wait in line for a vaccination against coronavirus on Sunday (January 10).

Israel’s vaccination rate is the fastest in the world, according to the Our World in Data website, a collaboration between Oxford University and an educational charity.

So far, nearly one in five Israelis have already been vaccinated. The Reuters news agency on Sunday reported that 19.5 percent of the population has been vaccinated, including more than 72 percent of the over-60s.

Israel, which has a population of of 8.65 million, is delivering jabs of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to about 150,000 people a day, according to reports.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said all Israelis over the age of 16 will able to be vaccinated by March.
