The province of Catanduanes in the Philippines has been hit by heavy rain causing flooding and mudslides.

Footage filmed on January 9 shows residents and rescuers wading through knee-deep floodwaters. Footage also shows a school flooded and roads being cleared.

Heavy rain has been battering the region since last month and has caused flooding in several provinces in the Bicol region.

The state weather service said the continuous rain was caused by a frontal system and the surge from the northeast monsoon.

Teacher Mary Joy Valledor went to the building to collect some teaching materials in Catanduanes province but she was stranded after the ankle-deep muddy water started to rise on January 9.

She said: "I hope everyone was safe. Some of the books were wet after the rain but I could not save them all."
