Chicken owner Maarten Bos from Ouderkerk aan den IJssel, Netherlands, has built a device that allows his chicken coop to automatically open with the use of light sensors.

Footage from January 11 shows Bos showcasing the ingenious method of letting his chickens going to roost.

Bos used the programme Arduino to complete the process.

He said: "This is a chicken coop hatch controlled by an Arduino Uno microcontroller.

"When the light sensor detects that it is getting dark, the hatch is closed.

"The chickens go to roost as soon as the sun has set.

"The system closes the hatch about an hour after sunset so that no chickens have to sleep outside."
