Residents of Hangberg, a neighbourhood in Cape Town, clashed with armed police officers over land evictions on January 12.

The clashes erupted after an anti-land invasion unit attempted to move residents off a piece of land where they had erected structures.

Footage shows officers armed with stun grenades, rubber bullets and teargas firing towards the protesters while patrolling the streets.

Residents of Hangberg in Hout Bay clashed with police and Cape Town Law Enforcement officers after the City of Cape Town’s anti-land invasion unit tried to move residents off a piece of land on which they had erected informal structures.

The police and law enforcement officers faced off against protesters who pelted the officers with rocks and stones from elevated positions on the mountain side. Police retaliated with stun grenades, rubber bullets and teargas.

Once the protesters had been pushed back, the police started to withdraw. The area remains volatile.
