Firefighters battle blaze at Buddhist temple in Thailand
Firefighters battled a huge fire that engulfed a Buddhist temple in Thailand.
The blaze was reported to have started at the crematorium of Wat Thep Sirin Temple in Bangkok on January 11.
The chamber was being prepared and left opened when flame started and spread to the curtains and wooden furniture inside the temple.
Sagha Sirinai, 60, a security guard in the temple, said this is not the first time that the temple was engulfed in fire.
He said: ‘I don’t know why it occurred this time but a fire happens really often there.’
The temple had several flammable objects made of wood and plastic so the fire spread quickly before the firefighters arrived.
The blaze was contained after almost an hour but it has left heavy damage on the temple and completely destroyed the wooden rooms.
No one was also reported to be hurt in the fire as the passageways were spacious enough to escape
Adul Mandang, 46, one of the fire volunteers who responded, said they were not able to determine the cause of the fire.
He said: ‘Most of the damages occured on the ceiling and curtain of the crematorium.
‘We have to wait until officials come to examine the incident and damages again.’
Police officers also arrived to investigate and interviewed the staff working on the crematorium who said that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit.
A damage survey was done the next day (January 12) but investigations on the cause of the blaze is still ongoing.
