North Carolina-based student Dylan tries out the latest trend going around TikTok - and it involved eating a burnt orange to recover taste and smell loss.

The viral trend that many claim to be a Jamaican remedy promises to miraculously restore a loss of taste or smell from coronavirus.

Dylan (@dylangwall) posted a video of himself burning an orange, cutting off the blackened skin, mixing it with brown sugar, and eating the concoction.

The University of North Carolina Wilmington student's attempt gained a whopping 17.5 million views on TikTok.

Dylan told Newsflare: "I lost my taste and smell due to Covid almost months ago and tried a Jamaican remedy on Christmas Eve to gain it back. I charred an orange and mixed it with brown sugar as a last-ditch effort."

In a follow-up video, he revealed: "Unfortunately, after all of my efforts, my taste did not come back."

Experts say there's no scientific evidence that eating charred orange can cure a loss of senses.

Speaking to NBC's Today, Pamela Dalton, a researcher at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, said it's likely that those who try to burn an orange to get their senses back had already gained some smell and taste and haven't realized.

Dalton said people doing something intense like burning an orange will "give you an extraordinary sensation" and that there is also the placebo effect to consider.
