This is the adorable moment a shivering orangutan covered itself in a gunny sack to keep warm during a cold spell in Thailand.

The animals at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province were enjoying the bright – but chilly weather – on January 14.

With temperatures plunging to the low-teens, one of the orangutans carried a sack around its enclosure to cover itself while enjoying the sun.

The cute primate struggled to wear the sack around its body as it did not have a hole in the end.

The gunny sacks were provided by the zoo caretakers so the animals can use them to warm themselves.

Anupong Anun, assistant director of the zoo, said they need to keep the animals healthy during the cold season.

He said: "The zoo is getting cold and windy causing animals to find all sort of ways to keep itself warm.

"We organised a team of veterinarians to keep the animals healthy since the changing weather can easily cause these animals to be sick.”

Aside from the orangutan with the sack, a hippopotamus and some turtles were seen laying on the ground to drench itself in sunlight.

Capybaras were also given haystacks inside their enclosures to keep them warm while playing.

The Khao Kheow Open Zoo remains closed due to strict Covid-19 prevention measures.

Thailand’s Meteorological Department warned that temperatures will remain in the single digits in some parts of the counts until around January 18.

Meteorologist Seree Supratid, director of the Climate Change & Disaster Center said the was cool temperatures were caused by a high-pressure system from China. The La Nina phenomenon – where sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific are lower than normal – was also contributing to the cold, she said.
