A once-busy shopping mall in Bangkok, Thailand, was eerily quiet on Friday (Jan 15) amid a tourism slow-down and second wave of Covid-19 cases.

Footage from the Siam Square centre in the heart of the Thailand capital shows that many shops have been shuttered and closed.

Shopping malls had previously been packed with tourists from China but holiday travel was stopped in March last year and restrictions are still in place.

A second wave of Covid-19 infections that started in December has seen nightclubs ordered to close while bars and restaurants must follow 9pm closing time guidelines, which the government believes will limit the chances of new coronavirus infections spreading.

Thailand’s Krungsri Bank forecasts that it will be up to three years before tourism returns to its pre-pandemic tourism levels.

A further 230 new Covid-19 cases were recorded on Saturday (Jan 16) taking the overall total 11,450 with 70 deaths.
