A group of street dogs in Sauraha know they can rest safely in the home of a local vet.

Footage shows numerous pooches resting in the building without a care in the world.

The vet vaccinates them and fixes their ailments free of charge with the support of local charity HART (Himilayan Animal Rescue Trust) Nepal.

Filmer John Lee travels around Asia most of the year and was staying with the vet - who usually takes care of elephants.

He said: "Often the dogs fight each other when out on the street, but they know that the stairwell is a sanctuary.

"Every day they gather on different levels of the stairway, so as not to disturb any of the others.

"Each dog has their own favorite spot.

"A group of locals help take care of the dogs and if anyone wants to help pay for food, vaccinations, and medical treatment for the dogs of Sauraha."

HART Nepal says online: "[We exist] to redress some of the suffering endured by animals that are without power to control their lives.

"Neglect, cruelty and ignorance combine to make the world a hostile place for many creatures."
