Around 700,000 pilgrims gathered on the banks of the Ganges river in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, despite COVID-19 fears as the Hindu Kumbh Mela festival began on January 14.

The festival has been dubbed the largest religious festival in the world as millions usually attend.

Devotees believe that bathing in the river will help them attain "moksha," setting them free from the cycle of life and death.

District officials have warned people to only attend after they have tested negative for COVID-19 and advised them to wear face masks.
