President Cyril Ramaphosa campaigned in the poor, and gang ridden area of Delft in Cape Town, ahead of the national general elections on 8 May 2019.

Delft is one of the most poverty and crime ridden areas on Cape Town’s notorious Cape Flats. Cape Town and the Western Cape is under the political control of the official opposition, the Democratic Alliance. The Western Cape is the one of the nine province’s not controlled by Ramaphosa’s party, the African National Congress.

South Africa’s elections on 8 May will be the 6th democratic general election since the advent of democracy which started with Nelson Mandela as the first democratically elected president.
