Stranded residents used a rusty old refrigerator as a boat to escape floods in the Philippines.

Footage shows youngsters riding in part of the metal casing while others floated their valuable items in the fridge to keep them dry after heavy rain caused floods which submerged their homes in Negros Occidental on January 9.

Tony Bryan Lucida, who lives in the village, said most of their belongings were damaged as well as their rice crops.

He said: ‘We were collecting all of our belongings from our homes and taking them to the evacuation centre, but we needed to return several times.’

Several towns in the province have experienced continued extreme weather since severe floods on New Year’s Day.

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office head Dr Zeaphard Gerhart Caelian said there were more than 1,500 families rescued from the flood.

No one was reported injured, missing, or dead but properties were left damaged during the flooding.

Monsoon rains happen every year in the Philippines but this year has been particularly bad.
