Protesters gathered in Bangkok today (January 22) to show their anger at the Thai King’s classic Rolls Royce.

Anti-monarchy activists claim the cream-coloured Maybach 62 is a symbol of the controversial royal’s lavish overindulgence at the expense of taxpayers.

Other models of Rolls Royce owned by the royal family include a Phantom VI, Silver Spur stretch limousine and Silver Spur Park Ward.

Protesters gathered at the Ministry of Finance at 1 pm local time while chanting and waving banners.

The demonstration came after mass arrests this month and in December targeting protest leaders.

Thailand’s strict Lese Majeste law has also been invoked, with opposition leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit facing prison after the Digital Economy and Society Ministry (DES) said it would file a criminal complaint of defaming the monarchy against him.

Anti-government protests erupted in Thailand last year as anger grew towards the country’s ruling military party.

The focus of the unrest also turned towards the Thai king, media and business.

Protesters are calling for sweeping social reforms including the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, a new constitution and reforms of the monarchy.
