Thousands of demonstrators joined an unauthorised protest in the Russian city of Novosibirsk today (January 23) to call for the release of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Navalny, Vladimir Putin's most high-profile critic, called for protests after his arrest last weekend on return to Russia.

On January 23, rallies for the freedom of Alexei Navalny were held throughout Russia. In Novosibirsk, a march was announced from the Siberian metro to Lenin Square. The protesters are chanting slogans such as "Freedom", "let him out", "Putin's resignation", "Russia will be free", "
Greetings to Navalny".
